Thoughts about
my call to the Pastorate
In the beginning, I felt that the call was pretty straightforward: “Go to Greensboro and start a church.” “Plant a seed and watch it grow”. The visual I had is that I would somehow be on the outside looking in; watching as the building(s), the people, and the ministries expanded into the fulfillment of God’s divine plan.
Today, while the vision (to build a house of prayer, a house of worship, and a house of connection in Greensboro North Carolina that would bring glory and honor to God) has not changed very much, my interpretation of the “call” has changed drastically.
In the beginning, I likened the call of God on my life to that of “administrator extraordinaire”. I fully believed that with intricate planning and sufficient attention to detail – in God’s time, the “vision” would blossom forth without a hitch. I have since come to realize just exactly what people mean when they say, “When God calls you, it is usually NOT for something you can accomplish in your own power!” Thus the call to “administrator extraordinaire” has long since given way to more radical ideals like: “prayer warrior”, “people lifter”, “opportunity finder”, and “potential developer”.
If you had asked me at the start of this leg of my journey “What does it mean to be a Pastor?”
I would have had an articulate and well thought out answer whose length would have been limited only by the length of time you had to listen to my diverse and assorted views on the subject.
Having walked in the shoes of a Pastor for more than 4 years now, the answer to that seemingly simple question is much less clear.
How could one possibly define the innumerable responsibilities and intense privilege that comes with walking through life’s up’s and down’s with a group of people who look to you for spiritual guidance and nourishment? For me, the confines of this paper are absurdly inadequate for explaining my (or anyone else’s for that matter) call to the Pastorate.
And so, with fervent prayer, and more questions than answers, I seek out moment by moment that which I am called to do and be as I walk the journey of life with Christ.
I believe with all of my heart that God WILL make a roadway in the wilderness – and if I am called to nothing else, I am called to step out in faith onto the roadway that has been fashioned for me by the Creator’s own hand and to walk that pathway in humility and love.
I do so in Service to Christ.
